The Awardometer Score

What is it?

The Awardometer is a proprietary score from 0 to 100 that measures a film's critical recognition based on prestigious film awards and accolades from around the world.

Unlike popularity-based ratings, the Awardometer focuses exclusively on recognition from major film festivals, academies, and critics' organizations to highlight films celebrated for their artistic merit.

How does it work?

Our algorithm evaluates films based on a multi-tiered system that weighs different types of awards and recognitions:

Top-tier festival prizes— The most prestigious awards in cinema
Major category wins— Direction, screenplay, and other key categories
Acting and critics' awards— Performance recognition and critical acclaim
Regional festival recognition— Awards from festivals around the world

Nominations are also factored in, as being selected among the best already represents significant recognition.

Fair comparison across eras

Cinema has evolved significantly over time, and so has the awards landscape. A film from the 1950s had far fewer opportunities for recognition than a modern production.

To ensure a fair comparison, the Awardometer uses era-based normalization. Films are evaluated relative to the awards that existed during their time, allowing you to compare a 1960 classic with a 2020 release on equal footing.

Canon recognition

Beyond festival awards, the Awardometer also considers inclusion in prestigious "best of" lists compiled by critics and film historians. These canonical recognitions help identify films that have stood the test of time and are widely regarded as essential cinema.

The Awardometer is designed to help you discover critically acclaimed films. Use it as a guide, but remember — the best film is the one that moves you.
